Gellert Grindelwald was born in Germany in 1883, in Schwarzwald (The Black Forest). As a child, Grindelwald loved to spend his time outdoors, fascinated by nature and the way things seemed to work. He was a precocious child, and he quickly picked up on how the 'survival of the fittest' worked. To him, it was naturally the next step to apply it to humans. Humans could be split up into two obvious categories, muggles or wizards and witches. Wizards and Witches were obviously superior to muggles--their magical ability was a clear indication of that fact.

He began attending Durmstrang Institute in the fall of 1894, quickly immersing himself in his studies. He became fascinated with Dark Magic, experimenting first on animals. He quickly moved on from little animals found closer to the castle to much bigger ones on the grounds. Eventually, he experimented on his fellow students, and was expelled as a result of it.

After he had been expelled, Gellert searched extensively for the Deathly Hallows. In 1905, he moved to his Great Aunt Bathilda Bagshot's house for the summer, having traced Ignotus Perevell to Godric's Hollow. It was there that he became close friends with Albus Dumbledore, the first wizard he had met who was as brilliant and talented as he. They shared a vision of a 'new world order' where wizards and witches wouldn't have to hide themselves, but would instead, rule over muggles. Unfortunately, an 'accident' which started with a cruciatus curse and eventually lead to the death of Ariana Dumbledore, Albus' younger sister, destroyed the friendship, and Gellert fled England.

Despite having left England, his plans, and the one person he considered his friend, Gellert continued his research of the Deathly Hallows. He discovered that Gregorovitch was in possession of the Elder Wand, also known as the Deathstick or the Wand of Destiny, and stole it in 1909. Gregorovitch caught him on his way out and Gellert stunned the wandmaker, gaining true ownership of the wand. He searched for the other two Hollows, but was unable to find them.

As a result, he began to raise an Army and began what others referred to as 'a reign of terror', as he attempted to begin righting the world, as he and Albus had planned so many years ago. The outbreak of the muggle first world war was the perfect opportunity--with muggles killing each other much faster than before, Gellert began to implement his policies, taking over his country of Germany before beginning to slowly spread.

The fall of the muggle German empire and subsequent end of the muggle first world war did not have much impact on Gellert's plans. He continued to spread, amassing an army and building Nuremgard, a prison which held his enemies. All of his actions were committed with the idea of "Für das größere Wohl'" (a greater good) in mind. A world in which wizards and witches didn't have to live under the international statute of secrecy, where they didn't have to hide who they were or their magical abilities for fear of being persecuted by muggles.

The outbreak of the muggle's second world war signified a much more significant shift in wizarding policies than the first world war had. While Gellert had taken over virtually all of Europe, he refrained from attacking Britain out of respect for Albus. Despite not having been in contact with his former friend, Gellert still considered him an equal--the only wizard or witch alive that was equal to him. However, despite not having attacked Britain, Gellert still ended up in a duel with Albus and lost on 2 September 1945.

He was promptly incarcerated in the prison he had built and has stayed in Nuremgard until his escape on 3 August 1999.

the personality.

Gellert, although once a charming wizard, has dispensed with the pretense in his age. He is very intelligent and still magically talented, despite not having practiced or used a wand from the time he was locked up in Nuremgard to the time he broke out. He is also ruthless--most people who had crossed him in the past were taken, locked up, and killed.

Despite having been incarcerated for so long, he will still do anything for 'the greater good', and for a world where wizards and witches do not have to hide their talents. He does not discriminate between those of pure blood and those who are not--Gellert recognizes that pureblood lines weaken as inbreeding grows. Any and all with magical ability and training are considered witches and wizards to him. At the same time though, anyone without any magical ability or the training necessary to control it are inferior, regardless of what family they were born into. As far as Gellert is concerned, a squib born to Slytherin's bloodline is as inferior as a mentally impaired muggle.

After having been incarcerated for so long, Gellert's mind is not accessible through the rationality of others. He feels remorse for all he had done, but this remorse stems from the fact that the lives of wizards and witches had been lost while 'the greater good' was never achieved. Everything he does now, is to atone for that, and to try and achieve 'the greater good'.

the appearance.

When Gellert was younger, he had always been described as a handsome blond man. He aged gracefully at first, looking distinguished at the age of 62 when he was incarcerated.

Today, anyone looking at Gellert could tell that incarceration has taken its toll on him. It cased him to age much faster than he would have naturally, although those looking at him now, at the ripe age of 115, would never be able to tell.
